But obviously many people think reading the NYT makes them "educated" or "informed", so we run into semantical problems.

Haven't read Moneyball but am well aware of its theses and agree that it is the appropriate Pelz analogue for baseball.CaptiousNuthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14440029537418230507noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11336670.post-1154019866747743752006-07-27T13:04:00.000-04:002006-07-27T13:04:00.000-04:00oops, the book is Moneyball.oops, the book is Moneyball.Tax Shelterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06971182282511022187noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11336670.post-1154019805473742262006-07-27T13:03:00.000-04:002006-07-27T13:03:00.000-04:00I like your definition of intelligence. Does this ...I like your definition of intelligence. Does this mean good education can improve one's intelligence? If so, is intelligence a skill that can be learned?

I think that in general, it's hard to be original and think outside of the box. As a result, the world is an inefficient place (or not as efficient as it should be). On the other hand, someone would say that because of this, there are opportunities everywhere.

If you admire Dave Pelz, then you will like the book Mondyball. If you have not read it already, it's a great book and I highly recommend it.Tax Shelterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06971182282511022187noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11336670.post-1153927432645426472006-07-26T11:23:00.000-04:002006-07-26T11:23:00.000-04:00There really aren't many brilliant people, only sm...There really aren't many brilliant people, only smart ideas and logic which can stand on their own.

Most people that seem highly intelligent are just parroting age-old ideas. They are usually just more glib and articulate than their peers.

Fifteen years ago I said to an erstwhile mentor (math teacher) that "intelligence is seeing things clearly". All of this time hence, I haven't been able to improve on that definition. As copiously illustrated on my blog, most Morons have psychological baggage that retards or precludes seeing things the way they really are.

Alas, I have hardly any anti-Moron mentors these days, but I will offer one up.

Dave Pelz is a guy who I truly admire. He is a revolutionary golf instructor and a remarkable businessman in his own right. Pelz has a PhD in physics and reduced the game of golf from a series of intuitive, auto-didactic tips to a science. I should more aptly say that he elevated the game.

His top students are Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson - whose games went to their highest levels after working with him.

For instance, he found that it is more important to hit your putts solidly every time than to make sure you start your putts correctly on line. Golf had been played for nearly 100 years before anyone discovered this. Pelz's insight was nothing more than naked empiricism, unearthed by scientific experimentation on a precept no one ever bothered to question.

I guess that intellectually, I admire empiricists above everyone else. Clearly their bastion is in the business world, far from that of the nuanced theoreticians like Dr. Mankiw.CaptiousNuthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14440029537418230507noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11336670.post-1153830369176673822006-07-25T08:26:00.000-04:002006-07-25T08:26:00.000-04:00great blog! but can you also blog about the anti-m...great blog! but can you also blog about the anti-morons? there has to a lot of smart people out there that you admire, or agree with, right? would it be also interesting to write about why they are right and what makes them great?Tax Shelterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06971182282511022187noreply@blogger.com
