I Blame Obama For This Job Loss Too!

After deadpanning a *we have to talk about something* early this evening, my first wife informed me that she wants to quit her job.

So that'd be great - with me trying to quit trading the markets....we'd be one big unemployed family!

She said she'd take a year off so I can focus on my edu-preneurial pursuits and in the worst case scenario she's confident that she can land another similar job 12 months from now. (Anyone that believes she'll ever go back to that corporate Wall Street BS after a sabbatical is a complete and utter Moron!)

In other words it would only be a trial - one that would cost 50k (our annual bills), out-of-pocket health and dental coverage, plus the money we save each year from her salary.

Now we do have the cushion and the risk-taking appetite for something like this...

But I haven't greenlighted her in any way shape or form. I'd have to crunch some more numbers and really think hard about this. Believe me, there's nothing I'd like more than a break from my kids; and there's nothing she'd like more than a break from the grind and the opportunity to spend time homeschooling the Prince and Princess. There's no doubt in my mind that I would become a whole lot more productive with this website and my incipient one if I had, I don't know....more than a hour or so each day at my PC!

If that means that she would quit next year just before golf season starts, sounds like a good deal.

PM,

Golf?

Let me give you a quote directly from my first wife's mouth:

"This way you can spend 15 hours a day on your website..."

I've got a big 4-5 day golf tournament in a month. And I'm practicing real hard for it. After that I'm going to put the clubs away for a little while.

I guess she expects you to sleep during the day and stay up all night?

A sweet choice, one that puts you both in control of your destinies. (Unlike many of us who were buried under the manure pile called "unemployment.")

Any more tantalizing details about your "edu-preneurial pursuits?"

Hi Laura,

Well the website and maybe something like this.

I've thought about a magazine type thing too but don't like the prospects in this crowded media market.

Lots of people are doing private consulting for newbie homeschoolers (not me) and generating curricula (also not me). I'm always happy to see people do what brings them joy but for me, "do what you love and the money will follow" hasn't really panned out. But I still get to do what I love so there's that.

Laura,

Morality first. Entrepreneurship second. And then academic nonsense ,like diagramming sentences(!), third. Those are my homeschooling priorities.

I know plenty of people who make gobs of money but have terrible home situations, who can't hit a golf ball, who don't have any hobbies, who don't have relationships with their kids other than an occasional ride to school, etc.

It's not just about money, and I know you know that, but I believe strongly that the only good money comes from productive entrepreneurship.

Signed, a recovering trader (money changer) who's married to a woman in the Wall Street skim biz.

I don't know that you have to *love* what you're doing.

But one thing is certain, if a person HATES it....by all means they need to quit and do something else - no matter what the feared impact to their lifestyle (BMW, cleaning ladies, dining out, living in a safe neighborhood, etc.)
