What's funny, to me anyway, is how many *secular* homeschoolers will be shocked by this article. Of course most will ignore/dismiss it....but at least a bunch will become annoyed at the aspersion of being *anti-liberal*, *anti-progressive*, or whatever.

The fact remains that educating your own children is the ULTIMATE act of anti-socialism a family can make in 2012 America.

I could even go so far as to turn this around and say....that homeschooling your own kids and not supporting libertarians is a more pronounced demonstration of hypocrisy.

But that would be a little harsh.  I'm pro-anyone who teaches their own despite their false idols, ignorance, misconceptions, latent bigotries,...etc.  After all, some of my best friends (and relatives) are communists!

Swedes = Neo-Nazis!

Parents in Sweden are amazingly NOT ALLOWED to educate their own children:

Local school officials reported the Himmelstrand family to the social services in November when their 7-year-old son did not show up for mandatory schooling. Jonas Himmelstrand — like many other homeschoolers in Sweden — was forced to meet with local “social” officials to explain himself.

“It was just harassment,” he said. “But we were not going to take any chances with anything.... You never know with Swedish social authorities. You never know.”

Another homeschooling family, the Johanssons, was viciously ripped apart by the authorities in 2009 over the issue of home education as they attempted to leave for India. The traumatic episode still haunts Swedish homeschoolers and is always in the back of their minds when considering their options.

Himmelstrand went to the social services meeting alone — without his son — after making sure that his family was safe on the Aland Islands in Finland. He asked the social services if they would guarantee that his family could remain in Sweden safely. They said no, matter-of-factly stating that to homeschool safely, the family would probably have to leave country.

So they did.

There were huge fines involved, too. Around Christmas, the family received a letter explaining that the authorities had decided to impose a fine of about $26,000 – $13,000 per parent. “At that point we kind of felt like, are these people crazy?” Himmelstrand told The New American in a telephone interview. “Don’t they realize that would ruin our family?”

The Himmelstrands responded with a strongly worded letter asking officials to clarify whether they truly intended to destroy an innocent family based on such a controversial political principle. The family also warned authorities that they would leave as exiles before allowing themselves to be destroyed by the punitive fines.

Incredibly, the local government responded with a letter imposing yet another fine. And that, Himmelstrand said, was the last straw. The family moved promptly thereafter, not making the news public until everyone was safely beyond the grasp of Swedish officials. Himmelstrand did not want to wait around to find out what the local government’s next move might be, he explained.
Some commentators have even seized on the issue of persecution to call for structural reforms such as a true Constitution that protects individual rights in Sweden. The Nordic kingdom — which prides itself on its reputation — has also attracted fierce global condemnation for its half-baked campaign to abolish homeschooling and alternative education. Such schemes have not been attempted in a Western nation since Hitler’s Nazi Germany tried to eradicate home education.

Of course, even before home education officially became “illegal” in Sweden, it was severely restricted. And when parents attempted to educate their children without government permission, Swedish authorities often responded with brute force.

Historians will no doubt remark at the astonishing lack of popular resistance to continued encroachments on liberty, in nominally *democratic* countries.

Perhaps it's easier for the lumpen masses to rise up against a brutal dictator than against a faceless, tyrannical bureaucracy?

Your House Isn't Really Private Property...And Your Kids Aren't Really Yours

So a poor kid has cancer...

He undergoes long, torturous treatment...

The disease abates...

Except his doctors are trying to force him, i.e. overrule his parents(!), to undergo more chemotherapy and radiation.

But the doctors wanted to give Jacob several more rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, despite the clean PET scan. When asked why they wanted to keep giving Jacob these incredibly dangerous drugs, the doctors replied that this was “the standard of care” for his illness.

Jacob’s parents begged the doctors to make an individual diagnosis, rather than simply following unbending standards. But the doctors were steadfast. All children with this cancer needed multiple rounds of these drugs—regardless of PET scan results, the doctors contended.

Jacob’s parents did extensive study of the side effects of the five different chemotherapy drugs that the doctor wanted to administer. And they believed that the risk of the drugs was far greater than the risk of recurrent cancer, since Jacob had a clean PET scan. They said no to the doctors. No more chemotherapy treatment for now.

But the doctors would not take no for an answer. They called child protective services in Jacob’s county and asked the agency to file charges against the family for medical neglect.

After looking into the matter, both the local CPS agency and the local prosecuting attorney refused to file charges. They believed that the parents were making reasonable decisions for Jacob.

The doctors still would not take no for an answer. They called higher authorities in the state level CPS agency. The doctors had to make several calls before they finally found someone who would agree with them.

As a result of all of these calls, the local CPS agency was pressured into filing medical neglect charges against the parents.

The local prosecutor still refused to take a case against the family, so the state level CPS officials hired an independent private lawyer to serve as the prosecutor against Ken and Erin Stieler.

A jury trial is scheduled for early January to determine if the doctors will be given the authority to take over the medical decision-making for Jacob.

Now one would think that the homeschooling set would be MOST SKEPTICAL of the climate change global warming nonsense. After all it's nothing more than the revealed truth of government-funded, INTERESTED, credentialed experts - people/institutions that these parents won't trust in simple matters of phonics, arithmetic, and conflict resolution (socialization!).

But alas I've run into hordes of homeschooled kids parents who have swallowed whole this noxious garbage. Granted, I've been living in Boston and New York most recently...

The idea that these quacks can even accurately measure the Earth's temperature TODAY is ludicrous. NEVER MIND that they don't have *average temperature* data for Earth going, some 4 billion years or whatever it is to compare today's theoretical temperature to. It's easy enough to count barrels of oil burned and acres of deforestion...

BUT it's not so simple to model the most important climate-determinant, atmospheric gas. That would be *water vapor*, aka clouds.

It's truly rich that the people, like myself, who would love to debate these eco-pagan socialists are deemed *deniers*. Al Gore's cinematic propaganda (e.g. polar bear sensationalism), his web rabble-rousing, and his unwillingness to debate naysayers smacks of Nazism more than anything.

Global warming....brought to you by the same people who built the projects, who said Fannie Mae was solvent, who encouraged you to buy a house and invest in the stock market, who promise Social Security will be there when you retire, who drove this nation into $14 trillion of debt,...and who can't teach Johnny to read or add.

I just take deep breaths and remind myself that at least I'm not FORCED to associate with these people - the homeschoolers I mean. In fact I just stay away from group *science classes* once in a while depending the subject matter and who's running them. Make no mistake my son, at only age 6.75 has already been inundated with this flavor of nonsense and he knows to generally and quietly ignore it.

*Mind pollution* is 100 times worse for Father Earth than air pollution could ever be...

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - An Apple Inc store employee has started a union in a rare move at a company known for its near-fanatical following and cutting-edge mystique.


Cory Moll, a part-time employee at an Apple store in San Francisco, is working to form a union to fight for better wages and benefits and to address what he says are unfair practices in the company's glass-and-steel retail showrooms.


While unions are strong in industries like trucking and autos, they are largely unheard of in Silicon Valley companies, which pride themselves on being quick-footed and having the flexibility to hire and fire.


The would-be Apple union's website is sparse, but states: "At Apple, our most important resource, our soul, is our people. Our Time Has Come."

Environmentalists Pollute Earth with Socialism

That's the *custom* bumper sticker that I'm about to order and adorn my car with. I believe it will only cost $3 or so.

I thought the color green was a nice touch, no?

The only problem with annoying passers-by with such truth is that surely one of them will key my car or something. These eco-pagans are just seething with hatred. Have you ever met one?

I have to remember to order a couple extra. I can't wait to stick one on my *green* cousin's hybrid car - a vehicle that, even though he makes about 10 international flights each year,...it's a car that he still manages to drive, with no passengers, over 20,000 miles annually!

U.S. Immigration Opposes Asylum Decision

In a deeply disturbing notice, the United States Government Agency for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged an appeal of Judge Lawrence Burman’s grant of asylum to the Romeike family. The appeal was sent to the Board of Immigration Appeals in Fairfax, Virginia on February 25. In it, the ICE called homeschoolers too "amorphous" to be a "particular social group" and that "United States law has recognized the broad power of the state to compel school attendance and regulate curriculum and teacher certification” as well as the “authority to prohibit or regulate homeschooling."

On January 26, Judge Burman granted the Romeikes asylum after determining that the German government’s treatment of homeschoolers was “repellent to everything we believe as Americans,” and that Germany was denying the family “basic human rights.” The judge determined that the German state’s policy of imposing increasing and potentially crushing fines, the loss of custody of children, and possible criminal prosecution over homeschooling amounted to persecution. However, ICE pointed to the denial of an application in the European Court of Human Rights in the Konrad case as evidence that “the public education laws of Germany do not violate basic human rights.” ICE criticized Judge Burman for "improvidently disregard[ing]" the decision of the ECHR. In other words, it appears that ICE is arguing that U.S. judges should follow international law—rather than U.S. law.

Michael Smith, president of HSLDA, says that American courts should only rely on American law.

"American judges should use American law alone in making decisions about cases in American courts," Smith said. "Polls show that Americans by an overwhelming margin reject the idea of using international law in American courts to decide American cases. The use of international law in American courts is a threat to American justice and should be opposed."

In its appeal, ICE argues that the U.S. government has the authority to simply prohibit homeschooling, and this should disqualify the granting of asylum. ICE further asserts that Germany’s harsh treatment of homeschoolers is mere prosecution, not persecution. ICE lawyers wrote that "[e]ven were such fear[s] objectively reasonable, these sanctions would only amount to prosecution.” ICE argues that the judge’s ruling is "speculative" because sanctions had been applied in a “limited number of circumstances” and that the Romeikes had failed to “make any effort to locate an acceptable alternative school." These claims were fully argued in the first Romeike hearing and shown to be false. ICE also noted parenthetically that the "Immigration Judge did not address how under various state laws of the United States a person can be similarly prosecuted for not sending one’s children to school."

HSLDA Staff Attorney and Director of International Relations Michael Donnelly, who will continue to coordinate the Romeike family’s legal defense in this case, said he was not surprised by the actions of ICE or the arguments they presented.

"It is disappointing but not surprising that ICE has appealed," Donnelly said. "Judge Burman appropriately noted that homeschooling is legal in all fifty states, and his decision reflects U.S. law which upholds the right of parents to direct the education and upbringing their children as an enduring American tradition, entitling the family to protection from persecution. ICE argues that Germany’s denial of a parent’s right to homeschool for any reason is acceptable. It is shameful that ICE, and by extension the U.S. Government, supports the persecution of German homeschoolers."

So...

*US Immigration* thinks it fine (and worthy of Amnesty!) for border-jumpers to break into the the country, steal Social Security identities, send their kids to government school, and use emergency rooms as free drop-in medical centers...

But all those homeschoolers seeking political asylum from Nazi ancestors, yeah, THEY are a real threat to America!

Obviously, the idea that we should look to *international law* for how to run this country is ludicrous.

Though I was more off-put by the notion that prosecution is not the same as *persecution*. Heck, in this country if a so-called minority isn't merely granted a mortgage or enough representation on a color television sitcom it's deemed DISCRIMINATORY.

And it's not at all inconceivable that Big Government, one day, just goes out and bans homeschooling altogether. After all, look at the hugely unpopular cram-downs of recent times: Wall Street bailouts, Obamacare, etc.

So what would I do if homeschooling were suddenly illegalized?

I guess I'd either start up a new *private* school or send my kids to one that had liberal attendance enforcement.
