George Costanza - Occasionally Dead Right!

People in my *circles* know that pretty much all I wear is jeans and golf shirts - and have been doing so since 1992 when I was liberated from prison-school.

But after all these years I've decided to mix it up.

Yeah, I'm going with the *sweatpants* - actually with slightly more upscale *workout* pants these days as often as I can.

I was watching a guy in church the other day and contemplating how he had a t-shirt, a dress shirt, a tie, and a sport-coat on. I concluded that people only dress up in all those ridiculous *layers* if they want to fool someone (or God!) or sell someone something that they don't need.

Wearing workout clothes is also a good reminder....to workout more!

I also noticed that Tim Ferriss was always wearing workout clothes.

When in doubt, emulate him!

Macy's - Sanctuary For Perverts?

Hah!

Apparently Macy's, in deference to political correctness, now allows men to use the women's changing room.

I can't wait to try this out tomorrow!

Thanks to LeagueIslander for this one.

(Why do people instinctively think of me when they come across such *news*???)

Life Is Brief(s)

The other day I bought briefs (bikini!) at TJ Max.

Now I haven't worn them in over 20 years - having switched to boxers when I was 16 or so.

Why the switch? Why not, I guess?

I'm deliberately trying to mix things up with every aspect of my life. Just to give another example every time I go to the supermarket I try to buy something, anything, that I've never tried before. Plus the boxers were starting to feel like a cumbersome diaper or something.

It's all part of the age-fighting process. Without conscious effort one can easily devolve/ossify into a monstrous creature of habit - what I euphemistically refer to as an 'old coot'. These fossils, with their 5 meal rotation, ritualistic newspaper habits, hourly naps, perennial vacation schedules, and conversation-less spousal dinner dates are really just half-dead in my mind. They are merely sleepwalking nap-walking through their golden years.

So far I like the way they hug my rump....but of course the boys up front are suffocating having been *free range* for so long. And it's nice to no longer have to experience residual drops running down my leg.

And whatever did happen to that stud Lorenzo Lamas???

Oh boy! From Wikipedia:

Lamas began appearing in the Zaxby's restaurant chain television advertisements in May 2008.

In 2008, Lamas appeared in season 2 of CMT's Gone Country.

In 2009, he starred in the Asylum's Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus as Alan Baxter, a government agent who wants to destroy both the Mega Shark and the Giant Octopus to protect the world from their destructive fights.

Lamas now stars as himself in Leave it to Lamas, a reality show that focused on his own real-life family on E!

Personal Life

When Lamas moved to New York at 13 years old, he suffered from weight problems. In 1979, he took up taekwondo and karate and started to exercise. He has won countless black belts and showed his skills in the series Renegade.

Lamas has been married five times and is the father of six children by three different women.
His first marriage was to Victoria Hilbert from 1981 to 1982. His second marriage was to Michele Smith in 1983, which produced two children: son "A.J." Alvaro Joshua Lamas (born December 19, 1983) and daughter Shayne Lamas (born November 9, 1985). He and Smith split in 1985.

His third marriage was to Kathleen Kinmont (daughter of his Falcon Crest co-star Abby Dalton) in 1989; they divorced in 1993.

Lamas married his fourth wife, Playmate of the Month Shauna Sand, in 1996. Lamas and Sand have three daughters: Alexandra Lynne Lamas (born November 22, 1997), Victoria Lamas (born April 24, 1999), and Isabella Lorenza Lamas (born February 2, 2001). Lamas and Sand divorced in 2002.
Lamas fathered daughter Paton Lee (born 1988) with actress Daphne Ashbrook. He was engaged to Playmate of the Month Barbara Moore, but the marriage was called off.

Lamas got married for the fifth time with his fiancee of more than a year Shawna Craig, 24, in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico on April 30, 2011. His daughter Shayne Lamas, 25, attended her father's wedding.[2][3] He has told reporters that he will go publicly as Lorenzo Lamas-Craig, his manager, Don Gibble tells E! News, "He's always thinking outside the box so he decided to become the first celebrity to take his wife's last name." The other reason was cause his last wife, former Playboy Playmate Shauna Sands, kept the Lamas name and is legally Shauna Lamas. "His new wife didn't want to be called Shawna Lamas for obvious reasons," explains Gibble.
He took his (5th!) wife's last name???

Miss-Titled

My wife received a *catalog* in the mail the other day from Title Nine - some upstart women's clothing chain, I guess.

She liked the look of the merchandise but is disappointed that she can't go locally to a store to try the stuff on.

Me? I'm disappointed in the *name*. "Title Nine" is a clear misnomer.

Title IX refers to a federal law - one that is essentially welfare for female athletes at subsidized institutions. It's why colleges have to spend 100k a year on *female crew* coaches and whatnot.

But the insinuation that in the *clothing department* women are somehow under-served, I find that ludicrous.

Rightfully, they should open a MEN'S clothing store called *Title Nine*.

Always Teaching Lessons

One of my pet peeves is people (without being specific) who throw stuff in my(!) laundry inside-out.

Socks, shirts, pants, undergarments....EVERY article is turned inside-out. Who even disrobes in such a manner? People from the Bizarro world?

This makes *folding* clean clothes almost twice as much work. I'm a bit weird in the sense that I genuinely like to do laundry (and shovel snow, mow lawns, etc.) except that I've about had it with the inconsideration of other members of my family.

I guess what I should do is from now on fold everything as-is, fold the rags inside out and put them in drawers that way. No?

The Merits Of Barefoot Propaganda

From the Boston Globe:

We were born to run, but maybe not with shoes.

New research led by Harvard scientists shows that people who run barefoot or with minimal shoes -- as people have done for millions of years -- often land on their feet in a way that avoids a jarring impact.

Bare feet slamming down on all kinds of terrain without cushioned soles or arch support may seem like it would be hard on the body. But the new work, published online today in the scientific journal Nature, finds that the way the majority of people run in shoes -- striking heel first -- is not gentle at all.

"It's as if every time you land on the ground, someone hits you on the heel with a hammer," said Daniel E. Lieberman, a professor of human evolutionary biology at Harvard University, who studies the biomechanics of running in the lab -- and himself runs with minimal or no shoes. "It's an amazing thing. Running barefoot can be less impactful."

Instead of striking heel-first, barefoot runners tend to land on the ball or middle of their foot. Researchers need to do followup studies to test whether less impact translates into fewer injuries, but the new finding may become yet another example of the way in which evolution has made humans ill-equipped to handle some of the luxuries of modern life. Millions of years of evolution created humans best adapted to an environment lacking recent inventions such as desk jobs, video games, abundant processed foods, and -- perhaps -- the modern running shoe.

Really?

*Evolution* created a species that can't survive sedentary living? That can't survive sneakers and Crocs? People who wear expensive footwear don't reproduce as much? Is this the implication?

And how does evolution *create* in the first place? I thought it was a process of development and not an *author*?

Never mind. That's not the subject for this post.

How about that guy above - running near bare-foot in the Boston winter?

Although, the socks are probably gore-tex or something. The story here is *no shoes*.

Now I had never in my life thought much about wearing shoes - about whether or not footwear induced negative side effects until my blog was attacked by a barefoot brigade this past summer in - Is Your Brood Shod?.

But I've been thinking some more on the issue.

You see, while I have a pretty messed up back (1999 car accident, TOS) I also have some banged up knees. Even as a very active child I was told by some orthopedist in 1984, when I was 10, that I had *60 year old* knees. I thought this guy was a jurassic quack; but he insisted I was going to suffer long term problems - something about the cartilage under the knee cap grating when it slid it. Great. Thanks. He told me *no sports* for 6 months, and to do leg raises. I followed this Moron's prescription to no avail.

In 1996 I tore the cartilage and ACL in my right knee playing basketball and eventually had it reconstructed in 2004. Then I re-injured that one pretty badly this September. Now those injuries were exogenous, BUT I am also having problems with my left knee - one that's never even been injured. It's often painful and once in a while slightly buckles. In fact, I really believe it's worse than the other one!

Recently I tried to step up my yoga. I was doing a hard 45 minutes every single day. But ten days into that, both of my knees were killing me - so I had to dial it back. In fact, every time in my life I have tried to STEP-UP my workouts - be they for golf, for basketball, running more, etc. my body has always pushed back on me. I always figured, and still do, that my body was just never cut out for hard core training.

Though that doesn't mean I am going to stop trying to improve my physical state. I tried many things, for many years, before I discovered the benefits of yoga on my achy back.

Here's what I'm going to try now - not barefoot running, but at least spending a whole lot more time without any footwear. Obviously, with homeschooling, blogging, and occasional trading, I'm a home-body. I traipse around most of my day in flip-flops. But no more. Now I'm giving this barefoot thing a try - though it is wintertime and I'm donning socks.

I want to see how my feet react to having no artificial support and no artificial cushioning. Perhaps whatever strengthening or conditioning occurs will filter up into my fragile knees? What exactly do I have to lose with this experiment? (Aside from blackened socks.)

It's not just those hippy foot nudists who descended on my blog - it seems like the yoga crowd is big into barefoot evangelism as well. In the magazine I now get, there are plenty of adds for *yoga sox* and much talk about separating toes - toes that are unnaturally crowded together in shoes.

I mean, it's hard not to see that shoes are a *bailout* for the feet - and like all bailouts, doomed to have serious side effects.

When I was 14 I went to a new school - a Catholic high school where I had to shed my Levis and sneakers for a jacket, tie, and dress shoes. For the first 6 months of my freshman year, my feet, particularly my ankles, were in serious pain. I believe it was because I had never really worn *low-cut* shoes before. For years I had been wearing high-top or high-cut basketball shoes - Kangaroos, the Converse Weapon, etc. And not only did I wear them, like a punk I rarely tied them. (No *fat laces* though!) Obviously, my choice of footwear seriously weakened my feet - though in time, and from wearing shoes with much less artificial ankle-support, my strength came back.

Of course, it's not easy changing a habit like this. I feel awkward, unstable, and *naked* without my flip-flops on around the house.

Paul Mitchell's feet

This is an issue for my wife as well. She's got some really bad feet. One foot in particular has always given her trouble - it has an incipient bunion. Consequently, she absolutely never wants to take her shoes off, even around the house. Mrs. C-Nut says that she just *can't* go unshod. She's seen an orthopedist who did what they always do - prescribe some arch stretches and some expensive inserts - but there has been no progress. Now he says she has *plantar fasciitis*.

But I've been telling her about those barefoot fanatics, she's been listening and receptive. So, while we won't be out there grocery shopping and jogging with naked feet like those bohemians, the C-Nut family is at least giving this no-shoe or less-shoes thing a test run.

Chicks Are Sheep!

Around these parts, EVERY SINGLE *mom* wears black workout (stretch?) pants....ALL OF THE TIME.

Even the ones who don't workout - but should or don't need to - can be seen wearing them.

I recall that my kids' old obese, disheveled, sapphic babysitter and her grungy friends used to derisively refer to these animals as *Talbots moms* with their *$80 yoga pants*.

Let's not forget those hideous, pink Red Sox hats!

Now I may dress the same all the time - jeans, sneakers, and golf shirts - but at least in doing so I don't dress like all the other members of my gender species.

Why can't they make their staple outfit a skirt? They can even make it out of the same material for all I care.

And while we're on the subject, some of these chicks need to get up earlier so they have time to fix themselves up, lose those hats, and perhaps put a smart ribbon or bow in their hair.

After 15 minutes of searching, I finally found what I wrote on this subject some 3.5 years ago:

I may get in trouble for this, but it needs to be said.

Another thing I hate about Boston is how homely the women dress. Women up here hardly ever wear skirts, heels, or even blouses. Everywhere I go, ladies, young and old, are wearing jeans, sneakers, Red Sox hats, sweatshirts, and tee shirts. Underneath those hats is usually unkempt hair.

No DA, it is not a lesbian thing. ALL WOMEN UNDERDRESS UP HERE.

I chock it all up to the groupthink contagion. It's easy to walk around dressed like a slob college student, if only because everyone else does.

Greater Depression Footwear

Hey, if they can have *Coke bottle glasses*....then why the heck not?

Now, shouldn't someone tell them that they can return the empties for 10 cents and feed their entire village for a month?

The toe-liberators have calmed down a bit, but not until they stretched Shod Your Brood to a MM blog record 33 comments!

Perhaps they can enlighten us on 2-liter flip-flop orthopedics?

And to think that tremendous 80s flick was billed as fiction - as a parody!

Shoot, Taylor wasn't even born when that one came out.

And thanks to Shampoo, aka Paul Mitchell, for that provocative pic!

Case Study In Comparative Advantage!

TOKYO -- Who said bras are only for women? A Japanese online lingerie retailer is selling bras for cross-dressing men and they've quickly become one of its most popular items.

Since launching two weeks ago on Rakuten, a major Japanese web shopping mall, the Wishroom shop has sold over 300 men's bras for 2,800 yen ($30) each. The shop also stocks men's panties, as well as lingerie for women.

Full story here.

Now, that Japan kickstarted this market wasn't so hard to predict....

Those Asian countries are, by necessity, experts in sub-A cup sizes.

While my *academic* economics is rusty, I believe this here is an example of comparative advantage.

True Redneck Tanktop!

This was taken in front of the Gardendale, Alabama Wal-Mart, where the young lady was shopping at the flea market.

Look at it closely:

Click image to enlarge if needed.

Now I ask you...

Who stands and looks at a pair of men's briefs and says hmmmm...I can make me a nice summer top from these!!

On the other hand...$6 for a three pack is a good price!!

But what if they weren't bought new? That's redneck recycling at its best.

Don't throw out yer feller's drawers when the skid marks don't wash out no more. Just cut the crotch out and wear 'em.

How very GREEN! Al Gore would be proud.

Now, that pic, for a second, reminded me of that *double loser* I caught in the Lakers tanktop. Click here to see him.

That was featured in my oft-hit, classic post - Marginalizing Red Sox Fans.

There's just something telling about almost any wife-beater....

And I never understood how those undershirts mitigated *pit sweat* either!

Someone, please edify me.
