Uplifiting "Forward"

Apparently there is ONE competent government agent:

Oh, there's MUCH more to know about Sheriff Joe!

Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and the County Supervisors said okay.

The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who'd like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows.

The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million. Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two years ago. He was neutered, and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78.

The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals.

I have long wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at the way he runs the jail system, and copy some of his ideas. He has a huge farm, donated to the county years ago, where inmates can work, and they grow most of their own fresh vegetables and food, doing all the work and harvesting by hand. He has a pretty good sized hog farm, which provides meat, and fertilizer. It fertilizes the Christmas tree nursery, where prisoners work, and you can buy a living Christmas tree for $6 - $8 for the Holidays, and plant it later. We have six trees in our yard from the Prison.

Yup, he was reelected last year with 83% of the vote.

Now he's in trouble with the ACLU again. He painted all his buses and vehicles with a mural, that has a special hotline phone number painted on it, where you can call and report suspected illegal aliens. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement wasn't doing enough in his eyes, so he had 40 deputies trained specifically for enforcing immigration laws, started up his hotline, and bought 4 new buses just for hauling folks back to the border. He's kind of a 'Git-R-Dun' kind of Sheriff.

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO

HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF

AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (In Arizona) who created the 'Tent City Jail':
He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights Cut off all but 'G' movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then He Started Chain Gangs For Women So He Wouldn't Get
Sued For Discrimination.

He took away cable TV Until he found out there was A Federal Court Order that Required Cable TV For Jails So He Hooked Up The Cable TV Again Only Let In The Disney Channel And The Weather Channel.

When asked why the weather channel He Replied, So They Will Know How Hot It's Gonna Be While They Are Working
ON My Chain Gangs.

He Cut Off Coffee Since It Has Zero Nutritional Value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, 'This Isn't The Ritz/Carlton.....If You Don't Like It, Don't Come Back.'

He bought Newt Gingrich's lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails.

When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

More On The Arizona Sheriff:

With Temperatures Being Even Hotter Than Usual In Phoenix (116 Degrees Just Set A New Record), the Associated Press Reports: About 2,000 Inmates Living In A Barbed-Wire-Surrounded Tent Encampment At The Maricopa County Jail Have Been Given Permission To Strip Down To Their Government-Issued Pink Boxer Shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 Degrees Inside The Week Before.

Many Were Also Swathed In Wet, Pink Towels As Sweat Collected On Their Chests And Dripped Down To Their PINK SOCKS.

'It Feels Like We Are In A Furnace,' Said James Zanzot, An Inmate Who Has Lived In the TENTS for 1 year. 'It's Inhumane.'

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: 'It's 120 Degrees In Iraq And Our Soldiers Are Living In Tents Too, And They Have To Wear Full Battle Gear, But They Didn't Commit Any Crimes, So Shut Your Mouths!'

Way To Go, Sheriff!

Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

Sheriff Joe was just reelected Sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona.

First off, how sad is it that a completely anomalous story of justice and political competence can make so many of us feel good?

Yet my cynicism triumphs. I just can't believe this guy is real. I fully expect someone to send me a link to snopes.com or other proof that Sheriff Joe is merely an internet hoax.

Definitely real and definitely getting in trouble with Janet Napolitano because he is rounding up illegals now.

He started the tent city years ago and still runs it, too.

Yeah I happened upon a story about *tent city* that was from 1999.

I like how he's not intimidated by *the law*....how he offered cable TV but narrowed down the channels.

Mayor Bloomberg seems to be a similarly resourceful operator - notwithstanding his *green* fetish.

I guess there are not too many criminal rights attorneys in Sheriff Joe's county. It is hot out there.

I am from phoenix, he is real :)

But there is other side of every story, and liberals/dems dont like him so much as u would guess.

But his anti-illegal-alien work is commendable. I dont understand why implementing (illegal immigration) laws is so controversial.

C,

Sheriff Joe seems to be tinkering on a model for a police state/prison-camp socialism that one day might be out of prototype and into working beta, at which point we can all have a personal try at it! Go socialism! So uplifting.

Maricopa County has major, major, major police corruption issues. Sounds like most of the PDs over there are suffering from "Occupying Force Syndrome."

Police state socialism-- one of the many benefits of 'illegal' immigration warfare!

Try this link: http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=site%3Alewrockwell.com+%2B+%22maricopa+county%22&aq=f&aqi=&oq=&fp=a914d81610aa54b4

And if your own google search skills are up to snuff (mine aren't apparently) look for more on the county by William Norman Grigg or search his blog, freedominourtime.blogspot.com he's written about that cesspool of a county quite a bit. Enjoy the edification!

(Luckily the pigs don't always win down in Maricopa, just most of the time: http://saltypig.com/blog/2004/12/judge-police-raid-of-hells-angels-was.htm)

I just don't see how allowing millions of illiterates to come here and get free stuff (education, medicine, welfare, etc.)....

And then have them naturalized and given EVEN MORE entitlements like gov't jobs, minority contracts, etc....

I don't see how that will mitigate extant *socialism*.

End the welfare state before ending the *police state*, then we can open up the borders, IMO.

Taylor Conant said...

C,

I won't have this debate with you because it's pointless and you're wrong.

Here's your argument, in another form, you tell me what's wrong with it:

"I just don't see how we can let people smoke and eat fatty foods so long as their poor choices will result in higher healthcare costs for all of us. End subsidized healthcare and then we can end indoor smoking prohibitions and saturated fat regulations."

Or maybe you agree with that reasoning now, too? Shared premises so you must agree with neither or both.

CaptiousNut said...

Healthcare is more distorted than subsidized.

IMO, the biggest problem with healthcare is the regulation, not the subsidy (on income tax line and/or for uninsured ER drop-ins).

So I am for the depoliticization of the market, not reactionary gestures like fatty food bans and whatnot.

I say, let insurance companies discriminate based upon the healthiness of their customers.

Taylor Conant said...

C,

That took you a long time to try to weasel around to that, didn't it?

That's great that you think that that is the biggest problem. I don't even necessarily disagree.

That wasn't my point. My point was that the logical premises are IDENTICAL in those two statements. You must believe both or neither to be consistent. If you say you only believe one, you are inconsistent and illogical in this regard. So, which is it? Both, neither or illogical inconsistency?

CaptiousNut said...

The logical premises are not identical - that was precisely my point.

Perhaps your misunderstanding comes from reading and responding too quickly to my comment?

That is....if I'm also permitted to grade comments based upon *response time*.

You believe the state should be eliminated, right?

Well I believe it should only be halved.

Taylor Conant said...

C,

Which half and why?

In other words, in explaining the why you need to demonstrate how it is logically consistent and not arbitrary to reject one half of the government and not the other half.

CaptiousNut said...

I would like to eliminate the *bigger half*.

Because that makes the most sense.

(Took me a while to compose this retort.)

Taylor Conant said...

C,

I take your stubbornness on this to be some delay tactic or something. If your position is the objective truth you should be able to convince me of it and change my mind. If it's just a personal preference/opinion/hunch, there's certainly no reason for us to sit and debate something like that.

Truly unfortunate that this is the response I get every single time I debate a topic like this. You, that Ken Silber douchebag, my old econ prof... seems I am either too stupid/simple/ignorant/unimportant to be teachable on how obviously I am wrong on all of this. Disappointing, to say the least and I don't feel respected, but maybe I don't deserve it? That's the message I am getting.

Consider me in a huff.

CaptiousNut said...

huff - 1. a mood of sulking anger; a fit of resentment: Just because you disagree, don't walk off in a huff.

Superb diction here!

AND, dictionary.com's usage example looks *TAYLOR*-made as well!

*Objective truth*....

Okay, Aristotle.

Don't go by the time-stamps. This response took me only 1 minute and 37 seconds. Let the record show that I was exhausted to boot!

Taylor Conant said...

C,

Oh, so you reject objective truth in favor of relativity, then?

You can do better than this but you choose not to, sadly. Fine, I'll leave you alone about it.
