Postal Service Considering Job Cuts; First in History

WASHINGTON (MyFOX Atlanta) -- The struggling economy is taking a heavy toll on government workers, even mail carriers.
For the first time in history, the U.S Postal Service is considering thousands of job cuts nationwide.
A spokesperson for the postal service said the first step in the process is offering early retirement to workers over the age of 50 with 20 years of service. After that, the spokesperson said, layoffs are a possibility. First up would be non-union workers with less than six years of service.
But the spokesman said customers should not see any decrease in service.

So they can layoff thousands and suffer no decrease in service?
Sounds like they are admitting the Postal Service is a *jobs program*.
I'll tell you what, if they ended the government postal system tomorrow, nobody would suffer. All they do is bring me piles of trash.
Mail is an *environmental* disaster. Where are the greens on this?
And sorry Perry Eidelbus, there's also nothing libertarian....about using the mail.

Dude,
The federal government itself is a jobs program.
Remember the shutdown in 1995 when 850,000 "nonessential workers" were sent home?
I didn't notice any diminution in service. Maybe someone, somewhere did?
