My brother works in construction & apparently rats and rehab jobs go hand and hand. They use the heavy duty spring loaded traps but they have a twist. They lay out a trap and put plenty of bait on and around it but don't set the spring. The next day the same thing but with a little less bait. After a few days they set out several traps and set the springs. The rats are lulled into a false sense of security plus it tends to eliminate finding the bait w/o the trap going off frustration.

Anon,
I think it's called *pre-baiting*.
Coincidentally, I just read about it today!
